First Round –  5 October 2012
Tennis Auckland provided the following article on round 1 of the Scarbro Caro Bowl.

The 2012 Scarbro Caro Bowl interclub competition got underway last Friday evening in windy but fine conditions at the participating club venues. Last years men’s finalists played each other first up this season with Blockhouse Bay defeating current champions Remuera on a sets countback. Remuera claimed both of the doubles matches but Davis Cup player Dan King Turner scored the only singles victory for the defending champs.

Cockle Bay secured an opening 4-2 win against Pompallier led by Auckland junior Cameron Norrie who posted a straight sets win over Kevin Doh. Cameron went on to win the junior ITF tournament in Auckland over the weekend. Singles matches were even in this contest but Cockle Bay secured the win by taking both doubles matches.

Royal Oak trounced Herne Bay 6-0 without losing a set while Parnell edged past Kohimarama 4-2 despite singles losses by former Davis Cup players Mark Nielsen and Steve Downs.

In the women’s section, defending champions Kohimarama made a winning start by defeating Parnell 5-1. Kairangi Vano and Luci Barlow both lost their singles matches for their new club after switching from Kohi at the end of last season. Sunnyhills Tennis Club made Scarbro Caro Bowl history by playing in the competition for the first time and hosting its opening match at St Kentigerns College. Many club members enjoyed the tennis and the hospitality on opening night and were able to celebrate a well deserved victory against Pompallier. Paige Hourigan scored a good win over the experienced Tracey O’Connor to lead this young team to a 5-1 result.

A new look Remuera side got off to a flying start with a 6-0 clean sweep against Campbell Park with Ella Hassall putting in a dominant singles performance at number one. The experience of the Royal Oak team proved to be way too strong for the young Glendowie side although Leela Beattie dropped a set in her singles match. Nicola Kaiwai and Angela Swinkels comfortably won their singles matches barely losing a game against much younger opponents.
