Second Round – 12th October 2012
Tennis Auckland provided the following article on round 2 of the Scarbro Caro Bowl.

Four teams remain unbeaten after the opening two rounds of the Scarbro Caro Bowl Men’s competition in Auckland. Blockhouse Bay defeated Kohimarama 5-1 last Friday evening with former Davis Cup team member Adam Thompson leading the charge by defeating Jaden Grinter in three close sets.

Parnell flexed

its muscles in a tight contest against old foe Remuera after splitting the two doubles matches. Anton Bettink won a three setter against James Shorthall in the battle of the number one players while former pros Mark Neilsen, Al Hunt and Steven Downs all registered singles points for the Parnell team.Cockle Bay beat Herne Bay comfortably to record a second straight team victory and once again Auckland’s leading junior Cameron Norrie spearheaded the side winning in straight sets against the big serving Pat Metham. Royal Oak defeated Pompallier without losing a match to remain unbeaten after two rounds of the competition.

In the Scarbro Caro Bowl Women’s competition, newcomers Sunnyhills and defending champions Kohimarama are the only teams to stay unbeaten. Paige Hourigan scored an impressive win over Leela Beattie in the top singles to lead the Sunnyhills side to a 4-2 win.

Kohimarama beat Glendowie by the same margin and the key to this win was collecting both of the doubles matches. Olivia Isbey defeated long time junior rival Yoanna Peshev in the top singles match but her win was not enough to stave off defeat for the Glendowie team. Diana Deveya raised a few eyebrows with a convincing win over Alex Howell in the bottom singles match.

Pompallier, led by Tracey O’Connor, bounced back after an opening round loss to defeat Remuera 5-1. Marusa Pogacnik provided the necessary back up in the second singles to win her debut match in the Scarbro Caro Bowl after teaming up with O’Connor to win their doubles in a super tie-breaker.

Former professional Pavlina Nola easily won her matches to help Parnell to a 6-0 score line against the winless Campbell Park side. Nola did not play in the opening round but made a big difference to the strength of the Parnell team in second round play.

The next round of matches in the Scarbro Caro Bowl competition is scheduled to be played on Friday 26th October.
