Can Anyone Stop Parnell?

The two top men’s sides remain way out in front after five rounds of Scarbro Caro Bowl as both Parnell and Campbell Park scored another 6-0 each. Parnell have the maximum 40 points after not having dropped a match the whole season.

It helps Parnell that Kiwi No3 Rubin Statham has played several matches, on Friday he won his match against Kyle August of Herne Bay 6-3 6-0. Mark Nielsen, Anton Bettink and Steve Downs all completed the tie in straight sets over their opponents in singles and combined for straight set doubles wins too.

Campbell Park using Aussie pro Dane Propoggia at No1 also didn’t drop a set in their straight set defeat of Royal Oak. They now sit just one point behind Parnell on 39 points having dropped just one match in the season.

Remuera are in third place after their 5-1 over Cockle Bay where American No1 Paul Koenke dropped his match to Matt Meredith, however the remainder of the Remuera team was too strong and is now on 21 points, one ahead of Blockhouse Bay who were 5-1 winners over Pompallier.

The Bay side had Russian-born Kiwi Artem Sitak who is ranked around 300 in the world in the top singles who defeated Teo Susnjak in straight sets. Sitak along with a number of other Caro Bowl players may be absent this week as a result of the US$25,000 Configure Express Women’s Challenger and US$15,000 men’s Futures in Wellington which started on Tuesday until Sunday.

The best of the men’s sixth round clashes looks to be Cockle Bay at home against Parnell. It’s always difficult to tell who Cockle Bay will produce on the night and from what part of the country they are from. It will be a good opportunity for people in the Eastern Suburbs to see some top tennis. Other sixth round contests are Campbell Park aiming for another 6-0 victory when they host Pompallier. Royal Oak are away to Blockhouse Bay and Remuera have a home tie against Herne Bay.

In the women’s fifth round it was the young guns of Royal Oak who just won a countback for their side over Kohimarama.

Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning won their singles and doubles matches as Royal Oak came away winners 55-52 on games count back after matches and sets had been equal. The stars for Kohimarama were Heidi Stewart and Danielle Feneridis, both of whom won their singles and doubles, but it was just three games which now keep Royal Oak at the top of the points table on 31 points, with a bye to come ahead of Parnell on 29 points.

Parnell were big victors against bottom placed Glendowie 6-0 while Remuera grabbed their first win of the season with a close fought 4-2 triumph over Mission Bay. Mission Bay are now at home versus Parnell in the sixth round while the quaint surroundings of Pompallier tennis club will have a visit from Kohimarama and Glendowie are at home against Remuera with both sides close on the points table.

Two Sides Take Charge In Both Men’s & Women’s Competitions

Round two of Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis saw Kiwi Davis Cup player Rubin Statham return to tennis in New Zealand to add even more strength to his Parnell club side. Ranked at just outside of the world’s top 300 Statham who had reached the Commonwealth Games quarterfinals beat American Paul Koenke 6-4 6-2 as his Parnell side defeated Remuera 6-0. Parnell are now equal first on the points table with Campbell Park on the maximum 16 points and have a significant break on the rest of the teams.

The nearest rival is Cockle Bay who have had a win and a loss and sit on eight points.

Campbell Park had an easy 6-0 victory over Blockhouse Bay, who on paper looked like a contender prior to the season starting but have not been able to use the injured Marcus Daniell or any other of their international players.

The Park side featuring it’s former Argentine internationals Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettigrosso as well as former Kiwi internationals Adam Thompson and Robbie Cheyne only dropped on set in their win.

Other men’s winners were Royal Oak 4-2 over Pompallier after winning both doubles and the lower order singles. Pompallier took the top two singles thanks to Teo Susnjak and Gustavo Perziano. Cockle Bay were 6-0 over Herne Bay in the battle of the new sides to the competition, Andrew Batie having to work hard in the top singles to overcome Kyle August 6-4 6-4.

In the women’s section the young talent of Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning continued their form for Royal Oak who accounted for Mission Bay 6-0 without dropping a set. The win puts Royal Oak at the top of the points table on the maximum 16, however they will be aware that main rivals, Parnell have only played one match in the competition so far.

Meanwhile Kohimarama defeated a young Glendowie team 5-1 with Kairangi Vano struggling in singles to come back from injury. Vano was beaten in straight sets by Sarah McDermott, however she won her doubles match with Luci Barlow. Pompallier beat Remuera 6-0, again the experience of Shelley Bryce proving invaluable against a Remuera side which was missing a couple of its key players.

There’s no Caro Bowl over Labour weekend with the competition returning the following Friday 29 October.

David versus Goliath Women

Week 2 about to hit the Caro Bowl courts with a couple of potential carve-ups on the cards. The highly fancied top billing Royal Oak Ladies play the fresh faced 18 year olds from the mighty Bay. Ok not all are 18 but 3 of the 4 singles players are still at school, enjoying their youth, as they wait for the big guns to roll into the Bay on a Mission. Mission Bay few will fancy or give any chance, hence have nothing to loss.

Also Kohi is another top team looking to create a clean sheet. Can Glendowie get on the board is the question we all seek to answer? Like Mission Bay, perhaps points while be few and far between.

The other ladies match-up could be close. Will the ‘Shelley Bryce Show’ returning home have the same sting of last week. What action will we get this week.

Stay tuned as the adventures unfold. See twitter updates at www.twitter.com/carobowltennis and others please tweet updates using #carobowl

Pompallier Dominate

The SCARBRO Caro Bowl season started with a hiss and a roar at Mission Bay with most of the hissing and roaring from the Champagne Bollinger Pompallier team.

It was the ‘Shelley Bryce Show’ with some vintage touches from the captain and experienced pro leading her young charges like a film director in search of an emmy in an impressive display.

The top doubles were taken conformably 6-2 6-2 in the next episode of the ‘Shelley Bryce Show’ with Pompallier also taking 7-6 7-6 the second doubles.

The ‘Shelley Bryce Show’ rolled on with Shelley showing some supreme tennis with a conformable win in the top singles against a rusty looking Stacey Housley. All looked bleak for myemedia Mission Bay down 4-0 after Salema Taufa played some impressive singles.

Then in the match of the night with some aggressive tennis from both payers Dana Gray won a close 3 set match against Mikaela Davies much to the delight of the merry band of local supporters.

Another late highlight was the impressive young talent of Davina Meza who was filling in for the injured Christine Foote. Her straight sets win gave myemedia Mission Bay a chance to cancel another re-run of the ‘Shelley Bryce Show’.

Auckland Selectors Approve Caro Bowl Playing Order

TEAMS NAMED  - The SCARBRO Caro Bowl competition does not use Top Dog to determine each team’s playing order. Each year all teams have to submit their proposed team playing order to the Auckland selectors, who then approve, query or decline the proposed playing order.

CaroBowl.com now lists each team’s approved playing orders of each of the 15 SCARBRO Caro Bowl teams. So now you can put your money on a team by studying the form guides! Unlike Pakistani cricket no match fixing in Tennis! To much ego at stage.

Visit the team page above for full team details.
